poster concept ideas.

I really like these starting points. I am liking the visual style of laying tyopgraphy & illustration over top of photography, it gives it a nice clean feel, but also keeps a bit of a professional look. I do like my illustrated idea but it doesnt have as much of an impact as the others. I dont like the grain on the photos, makes it less effective. I need a clear picture to make it better. Next step is to go out and take my own photos so that I can have more New Zealand photos & more particular in Wellington.
I think this visual style would work really well as a website/mobile app as well.

Week 8

Thumbnails: Which rhetorical approaches show the most potential and why?
Moodboards: How and why are these elements appropriate or useful. How can they be combined, manipulated. What do they bring to the meaning of your conceptual ideas?
Exercise: Design matrix > begin to work with the conceptual and visual language combined. Random crossing of element from your word lists to generate rhetorical ideas.
word>image>rhetorical approach>style

Concept posters..(*)

Analyse which are the best concept/visuals.
What do you mean / intend by the visual / concept? What are you trying to say? Distill this down to simple 1 or 2 words > eg. plastic is killing us, or dog poop is evil!!
How would you change the imagery to make this message clearer? Use the cropping L's to home in on the most important moment in the composition. This can find a more dramatic visual composition but also help to see the essential message. From here you can add words to the images > the images then don’t have to do all the work on their own. Write a headline and a tagline. The words and images work together to tell the story > engage, inform, attract.

Catchy title/subtitle ideas:

  • Love the sea you swim
  • Coastal sweep
  • Turn up, clean up
  • Keep it swell
  • Keep it beautiful

Week 7

Your task is to develop a trans-media campaign that promotes and facilitates a community event. This will involve redesigning the home page and event resource page for an existing non-profit organisation’s (NPO) website. The event resource page will include a range of promotional material that can be downloaded by individuals in order to initiate their own community event.

Topic-Clean up our coastline

Love your coast Attract people to your beach clean up day event A fun day at the beach to clean up litter, learn about how our beaches can be damaged and how you can help keep them clean.

Who are the people in the beach/oceans?
What do they do there?
What are the activities/things at beaches/oceans?
What sort of beaches?
What sort of disasters are we preparing for?
What do we need to do to prepare?
What do we need to do to clean up our beaches?

  • Project plan: Finalise from work begun in class.
  • Collect design stylistic and rhetorical precedents: that you find inspiring/appropriate.
  • If you have chosen Beach clean up as your topic > Go to a Wellington beach to collect primary data and experiences, draw, write, photograph, record.

Mood boards: Collect and generate visual material > colour, images, marks, shapes, symbols, stylistic, conceptual, symbolic, topic tangibles. Use the Project plan, mind maps and word lists to help generate a visual language for the topic. Use found examples, make marks and drawings, take photographs, generate a wide range of evocative and representative visual material. You should include primary and secondary research to generate this material.
Print moodboards on A3 and keep collected images accessible for use in class.

  • Rhetorical thumbnails: A variety of sketches > quantity /diversity / risk taking in this is encouraged and emphasised. Remember this phase is free and energetic > don't limit yourself at this stage. Once you have generated many and varied ideas you can review, assess, edit, and develop.
Bring at least 5 clearly but simply rendered thumbnail concepts (in poster form including a tagline) on separate A3 pages to class next week.

Existing websites for Clean up your coastline.

I find that 'love your coast' has a very basic design. i feel as though the grid style doesnt work too well and i didnt know where to read/look. since it isnt too visually appealing i lost interest and went to look at the other website instead. the logo was great and that really caught my eye but everything else wasnt.

the sustainable coastlines website i find very effective, i love the gif in the background it makes it interesting and its great that its in greyscale because it gives a slight sense of darkness and seriousness to the situation and makes it a gloomy vision unlike what beaches usually are. the blue ties in well for obvious reasons and i find the font choice and layouts to be great. i like the simple nav bar at the top and how the website fits to screen. - it would be hard to make this website better unless you took a different visual approach
